SCHOOL VISIT/VISITS

School visits and trips are extremely important part of children's learning and education. At Bigland Green, we are very fortunate to be located in an area which offers a wide range of opportunities for the children. There are many museums and galleries at our doorstep which are visited by people from all over the world. The school will do its best to make sure that enrichment opportunities are fully utilised to support children's education. We know that as parents, you will also support this to the best of your ability.

From this term – the maximum contribution for any school visit or trip will be £3 per child. The remaining amount will be raised from other sources which will include fundraising, grants and additional income. The school is also planning to ask for a contribution of £1 towards all the trips – including those that have no costs – so that the additional income can be used to subsidise other more expensive visits/trips. Classes will have their individual budgets where the money will be kept to make sure the contributions you make are used for the right purpose.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

The children have elected a boy and a girl from their class to be the School Councillors for the year. The School Councillors play a key role in the school. They meet with the children in their class and find out ways in which the school can be improved. They also identify how we can make Bigland Green a better place for everyone.

The co-ordinator for the School Council is Kate and Rachel. Other members of staff also contribute to the school council when required. Abdul-Hayee will attend most of the meetings so that he can also support the work of the school council.

We want to congratulate all the children who have been elected as Councillors and wish them a successful term in their office. The school councillors for 2009-2010 are as follows:

Early Years – Yousif and Rebecca

Year 1 – Priscilla and Fahim; Imtiaz and Aatikah

Year 2 – Ishaaq and Noholi; Jamila and Safwan

Year 3 – Umar and Anisha; Sumaiya and Rakib

Year 4 – Ibad and Yasmin; Afzal and Ilhan

Year 5 – Aliya and Anis; Sameehah and Rahat

Year 6 – Anisa and Wajid; Fahimul and Tahmina

ATTENDANCE AND WELFARE ADVISOR

We would like to welcome to the school the new Attendance Welfare Adviser (AWA) Asad Khan. He has worked solely in Tower Hamlets for his whole AWA career. He said “I am very happy to be at Bigland Green and look forward to helping Bigland Green to get to the top, attendance wise.” He has been working at Stuart Hadlam School and schools in the east of the Borough for the last few years. He will be making a weekly visit to monitor the attendance figures.

He is very happy to see the school and parents working together to improve attendance and he would be happy to meet with any parents who would like to speak to him.

EXTENDED SCHOOL'S SOCIAL WORKER

Welcome to Shahnaz Choudhury who will be working with the school as the Extended School 's Social Worker. She is seconded from Tower Hamlet's social care services and Bigland Green is just one of the five local schools she is working in. She knows that this year will be very busy for her and she will be in school on Mondays.

Shahnaz has many years experience of social work in Tower Hamlets and has set herself the goal of meeting as many parents as possible. She is planning to have a coffee morning soon so she can get the work started. Keep your eyes peeled for the invitation!

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Parents are requested to ensure that their children attend school in full uniform. You are very welcome to purchase school uniform clothes from a supplier of your choice provided that they match the school colour. It is not essential that the uniform should have the school logo, although it is best if the logo is used. The school colours are usually available from Tesco, Asda, Marks & Spencer and other outlets including some shops in Watney Market.

It is important that you put your child's name on each item of school uniform in permanent ink. This will help us identify any lost property and return it to the rightful owner.

PE KIT REMINDER

To ensure that children are keeping fit, healthy and active, all children must wear the new kit for PE lessons.

It is recommended that all their clothes are clearly named.

PE Kit:

Boys

A pair of black shorts and a white round collar T-shirt (without slogans or pictures).

Girls

A pair of black leggings and a white round collar T-shirt (without slogans or pictures).

Black tracksuit for doing outside PE lessons in colder weather.

Trainers for outdoor use.

Jewellery should not be worn to school. If a child has pierced ears, then small studs may be worn. For health and safety reasons children with longer hair will be expected to tie it back.

Thank you to all the parents who have already purchased the correct PE Kit. If you need advice or guidance please speak to Mark (PE Teacher).

COATS

Please make sure that your children bring a raincoat or coat to school particularly those children going swimming on Mondays and Tuesdays. It is also important that children wear suitable footwear to school. Children must not wear sandals without straps as they can easily lead to accidents.

APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR

It is very important that children attend school wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for reasons of health and safety. The school uniform is the best cloths and will meet all the requirements.

Please make sure that your child has suitable footwear. Children must not wear sandals to school as they often cause accidents in the playground. On PE days children must have trainers.
